OBSTETRICS/GYNAECOLOGY

Obstetricians and Pediatricians can be either hospital or community clinic based. The clinic based Obstetricians will conduct deliveries at an affiliated hospital. Home delivery is not an option in Abu Dhabi.

Obstetricians generally carry out deliveries - normal or otherwise and midwives work in a supportive role. Post delivery women remain in hospital 3 -5 days depending on the type of delivery and midwifery follow up once discharged is still largely lacking although there are a small number of midwives working in the community as lactation consultants and as post natal advisors.

Major complications of pregnancy or any condition which may cause your baby to be born before 32 weeks will be dealt with  in the Corniche Hospital, this is the government  hospital totally dedicated to women. It has a wonderful reputation but without the frills of a private hospital.  www.haad.ae

Maternity leave in Abu Dhabi is generally 3 months; if the new mum has a UK / European contract then she will be entitled to the statutory 6 months granted there with an option to take unpaid leave thereafter. Read the small print in your contract… In the UAE paternity leave does not exist as we know it and new dads find themselves eating into their annual leave at this time.

PAEDIATRICS

Abu Dhabi offers excellent care for children, with the majority of hospitals having internationally trained specialists and designated pediatrics departments. The Corniche Hospital has a specialist team at hand to deal with any medical complications of the newborn, while medical issues in older children can be dealt with by any clinic based pediatrician and referred to the appropriate specialist if deemed necessary.

Alternative Medicine

The value of holistic healing is well acknowledged in Abu Dhabi with many specialist clinics offering Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Reflexology/ Massage therapy. The UAE Office of Complementary & Alternate Medicine, governed by the Ministry of Health, licences and monitors the practitioners of alternate medicine. Prices vary from clinic to clinic but expect to pay upwards of 600dhs / session. Private medical insurance will not usually cover alternate medicine. Personal recommendation is still the best way of establishing who might offer the most appropriate and effective treatment.

There are several reputable opticians located in many of the shopping malls, they will carry out on the spot eye tests, and they generally have a great selection of frames and will provide prescription sunglasses, a must for Abu Dhabi sunshine. They will also provide many of the regular brands of contact lens - Bausch & Lomb, Johnson & Johnson along with solutions and storage options.
