Abu Dhabi and its islands boast an ever increasing coastline lined with beautiful white sandy beaches, and although some has been developed much still remain.

Beaches

Beaches fall into 3 category:

Public Beaches
Beautiful wide stretches of sandy beaches, no life guard on duty and no flagged areas to denote safe swimming. Facilities are limited, no changing facilities, no sun loungers or umbrellas, but plenty of space. - Abu Dhabi public beach, Al Bateen Beach

Beach Parks
The Corniche beach park - for a small fee there are changing facilities within the park, showers available, food kiosks available, park facilities including kiddies play area and beautifully maintained grass areas with bbq bays. On the beach comfortable sun loungers/ umbrellas are available for rental. Life guard only on duty at certain times.

Beach Clubs
Some beach clubs are members only however many offer a day rate for non members.

These clubs are expensive but luxurious, mainly attached to hotels and offering all the associated facilities.

Many offer diving facilities/ instruction and boat hire for the sail enthusiasts.

Sailing

Membership of a Sailing Club will also offer beach club access/ leisure facility access – along with the many advantages to sailing enthusiasts - water sport equipment hire, boat hire , sailing events either competitively or for fun. Instruction is offered to junior members from 7 years upwards.

Surfing in Abu Dhabi

Generally low tidal swells off the UAE coastline tends to render Abu Dhabi not the most exciting of surfing locations however the East Coast, Fujairah, Dibba and across the border into Oman make up for this. www.abudhabisurf.com

Swimming in Abu Dhabi

Many clubs and schools throughout Abu Dhabi offer swim instruction.

Kids are encouraged to learn to swim from a very early age both from a safety aspect as well as for the sport / leisure benefits.

At certain times of the year, jelly fish can populate the coast line of Abu Dhabi. This will be signed on the beach and also reported on the radio and on the newspaper
